☆ Entry 002: Closer

I discovered this project quite by accident while browsing youtube one day. Being an idol fan, of course I was aware that their name was derived from Japan's AKB48. I made a promise to myself when I started my idol blog that I would be fair and give other groups the same attention.

I do not dance and cannot express enough that I do not specialize on dance at all, so I do not think I am a reliable person enough to critique that in detail. Someday, I might be able to convince my friend who is a dancer to do that. But for now I will stick with what I know and I do know a few things about singing, acting and mass media because understanding Mass media is actually a big part of what I do in the university.

The score is passing but I admit a little low. Writing this, doesn't mean I am saying I can do better. I am simply saying there are ways to improve. But I will try my best to be as professional as I can. Don't think I don't know you are trying your best, I do. I was part of a youtube chorus just once before and I laughed at myself because I sounded the worst. Just keep improving and I hope I can help.

Music : I like the composition of the song. It is upbeat and fun! YoroshiQ did a nice job with the song.

Singing is not easy. Those who are schooled in singing probably already know that technique is just as important as natural talent. As we all know, the most important thing about music is conveying the message. However, there are some parts of the song that I found a little difficult to understand. One of the things my teacher taught me in singing is emphasize to every word and syllable. Make sure even the person at the back can understand you. He wanted his students to develop the instinct to know when this is especially needed to be applied.

But the complicated part of it is that at the same time you have to give the song fluidity and make it flow like water. That is why when I was still learning how to sing, one of the first things I learned was breathing techniques so I can hide when I am out of breath as I continue singing. Sudden pauses don't always sound nice to the ears. Though I also know that in songs like Morning Musume's 'Brainstorming' sudden pauses can work. In 'Closer,' I noticed plenty of times where some of the members seem out of breath. Not because they are maybe but more on the song did not have a smooth continuity.

Maybe it is different for techno? I admit that I was trained for a different genre of music, so it is a possibility that I could be very wrong.

But I could spot some very nice and energetic voices in the group though, like Erein's voice. Kari also had her moments where she made me think 'wow, her voice stands out somehow.'

Video : I love Erein. She sings and dances with energy, but one thing that made me sad was the fact that majority of her face was so dark during her close ups and full body shots. And I just thought that she shouldn't hide her lovely face. The dance shots maybe should be shot in less random places. Maybe give a uniformed color in the background. Maybe a plain white wall is a safe color with nothing distracting in the background, like furniture.

I do like the story the video is trying to tell. It is the message of the whole song and says a lot about these girls.

'Work hard, bear with it and you'll find it will all be worth it.'

Just like singing, editing a video is not easy. In the university, we are often assigned to make movies a lot. I have watched how it is done and it is a tedious job. The editing of Closer, I felt hurts the eyes a bit with all The filters, saturation and brightness. It is made noticeable because the saturation and filters becomes different with every member.

The black and dark violet made the video darker than necessary.

Members : I find that every member has her charm. Every girl does. I am the type that likes to take maybe an unusual amount of time to find it.

Dexo has very lovely eyes and expressive. That is why I am not surprised her face is the first thing that greets you in the video. Her eyes brightens with her face.

Erein's is her energy and her smile that reminds me a bit of Kanon Suzuki from Morning Musume. It is bright and energetic.

Kari is absolutely pretty, though I'd like to see more emotion on her face especially when she is acting. Maybe emphasize or exaggerate her moves a bit? Acting needs a little exaggeration.

Rena and Ahyana are pretty too. Hopefully we'll get to see more of them in the next video. Mira has the most gorgeous eyes and this gift made her really stand out for me. Erina seems really sweet but she seems to be holding back which makes it really difficult to read her.

I'd love to see more individual personalities from the girls. I believe they can do it. It just needs time and I can't wait for what you can bring in the future. I am sure, that you girls have the ability to surprise us and I can honestly say I can't wait to get to know them.
